ARAB OPEN UNIVERSITY

FACULTY OF BUSINESS STUDIES

MBA Program_ Dynamics of Strategy (BB835)

TMA TwoSpring (Second) Semester, 2018 – 2019

Introduction:
Please read these instructions carefully, and contact your tutor if you require any further clarifications. You should submit your completed assignment to your tutor to arrive no later than the cut-off date: April 20, 2019.
Please use standard A4 size paper for submitting the hard copy of your TMA. Your name, personal identifier, course and assignment numbers must appear at the top of each sheet. A soft copy of your TMA must be uploaded to the university LMS system within the indicated cut-off date. The hard & soft copies must be identical. Please leave margins and space for tutor comments. Please use double spacing so that you can easily handwrite corrections to your drafts and tutors have space to include their feedback on the script. Start each question in the assignment on a new page. Any extended text should ideally be word-processed, but, diagrams and accompanying notes may be hand drawn and hand written and on an A4 paper.
TMA 02 General Guidelines:
This TMA has a 30% weight in the overall assessment of the module and have one long comprehensive question.
You need to critically think about and answer this question, do your own research and additional reading, documented library research is a must, and illustrative supportive examples expected. You may use the list of academic Journals provided in your syllabi to guide your research like Strategic Management Journal and Journal of Business Strategy.
Marks distribution: This assignment will be graded out of 100 marks, which will be allocated to your answer for this question. 20% will be deducted based on the following criteria:
• 10% for proper referencing (5% in-text referencing and 5% end-text references)
• 5% for adherence to specified word count
• 5% for the use of the E-library/External resources.
Question: (3000 words - 100 Marks):
A look at Strategic Management Literature_ Past, Current, and future.

Question:

Write a critical review of the most Cited Strategic Management Journal Articles, accompanied by a short description of their main ideas and findings (The five most significant or the most sited , or both_ until the year 2000? Then, critically discuss what you believe are the most important/cited the most Strategic Management Journal Articles written since 2000 until now (2019)? As a strategic management thinker or consultant, what would the future of strategic management look like (you may include topics which may or expected to dominate our literature and why?). The most topical issues which may generate lots of discussion in the future and why as predicted by you?

Suggested Answer or Guidelines for this Question:

“What are the most influential academic articles and ideas in the strategic management field”? The answer may not be straightforward, as there are many scientific journals in which strategic management research is published. You may look at the Strategic Management Journal, as it is one of the most influential ones, and is directly concerned with strategic management research. To establish what articles are the most influential, you may simply look at the five articles that have been cited the most. It is interesting to see that many articles were published in the 1990s, and that several of them concern the resource-based view of the firm.

Write a critical review of the five most cited and /or influential articles in the literature of strategic management until 1999. Then, compare and contrast those to the most cited articles from the year 2000 till 2019. What are your findings and conclusions?Set the future agenda as you see it regarding the most important issues which may dominate our agenda.

You may use the list of Journals given in your syllabi (like Strategic Management Journal and Journal of Business Strategy) to review strategic management hot issues over the years.

Authenticating your coursework
You must be able to demonstrate that the course work you submit for assessment is your own. You must therefore keep all working documents (electronic and paper) that you used or created while preparing the assignment, such as photocopies of sources and internet pages, your own notes on your reading and preparation and where primary research has been conducted, completed questionnaires or interview schedules, details of the process of analysis, field notes and so on. Most importantly, you should keep the early developing drafts of your coursework as evidence of the originality of your work by saving each revision to a file with a different name. This material should be kept until after the module results have been published on AOU-LMS. Please note that you are required to submit an electronic version of your work there.
Completing and sending your assignments
When you have completed your TMA, you must fill in the assignment form (PT3), taking care to fill all information correctly including your personal identifier, course code, section & tutor, and assignment numbers. Each TMA and its PT3 form should be uploaded on the AOU branch Moodle within the cut-off date. Late submissions require approval from the branch course coordinator and will be subject to grade deductions. All assignments are treated in strict confidence.
If you feel that you are unable to meet the cut-off date of the TMA because of unusual circumstances, please contact your tutor as soon as possible to discuss your situation and see if a possible extension to the cut-off date is or is not warranted.

Faculty of Computer Studies
T471 Project
Standard Report Format
Abstract. This should be two or three short paragraphs (100-150 words total), summarising the dissertation. It is important that this is not just a restatement of the original project outline. A suggested flow is background, project aims and main achievements. A bad abstract would have a final paragraph that just said "the achievements will be described" - this is useless, as it says nothing. From the abstract a reader should be able to ascertain if the project is of interest to them and presents results of which they would like to know more details.

Acknowledgements. Thanks to whoever may have helped you in any way - both serious and a bit of fun.

Contents. Includes titles and page numbers of all sections and subsections. Chapter 1 begins on page 1. Use Roman numerals for all previous pages, e.g.. title page (i), signed declaration (ii) abstract (iii), acknowledgements (iv) and contents (v-?).
It is often best include a separate list of all the figures in the dissertation (figure number, label, page number), and a separate list of all tables in the dissertation (table number, label, page number).

Chapter 1: Introduction. The introduction has several purposes. Clearly one is to set the scene for the project by giving a little relevant background information - try to grab the reader's interest early. Another is to clearly elucidate the aims and objectives of the project and the constraints that might affect the way in which the project is carried out. If the project involves the solution of a specific problem or the production of a specific system this should be clearly specified in an informal way. Finally, the introduction should summarise the remaining chapters of the dissertation, in effect giving the reader an overview of what is to come.

The type of project will dictate the content and structure of the following chapters and you should discuss this with your supervisor. For example, for a theoretical project it is likely that several chapters will be devoted to constructing the theoretical foundations for the project and will consist of your own interpretation and synthesis of existing work with suitable examples discussed throughout. A sequence of chapters that cover theoretical framework, conditions and assumptions and theory application and comparisons may be appropriate. For an experimental project, the experimental goals, design, execution and evaluation might be covered. What now follows is a typical structure for a 'design and build' project.

Chapter 2: Literature Review
The title of this chapter is open to discussion. Literature review is a bit simplistic and it may be that you can title the chapter better, based on the particular type of project that you are doing.
It is often useful to start this chapter with an overview of its contents, giving the reasoning behind why you have structured it in a particular way. The main thrust of the chapter is a review of relevant work by other authors and the relationship between this and your own work. If several other people have done closely related work in a different waythen the reasons for your approach should be summarised here.
A good literature review is synthetic: general trends and positions in your research area should be identified, and the papers you cite should be compared and contrasted. A literature review is not simply an annotated list of papers you may have read. It should cover a range of relevant material to your project. Everything you use should be cited by reference to the bibliography at the end of your dissertation. Follow the UoB referencing guidelines.
Everything that you write must be your own words and you must cite other people using references. You may also quote sentences from the work of others. These must be included in quotation marks and again the relevant work must be cited. Your signed declaration means that you will fail your dissertation if you do not acknowledge the work of others.

Chapter 3: Requirements and analysis. This should state, in a more detailed way, the objectives of the project by requirement and the analysis should break the problem down into manageable steps. There may be more than one suitable approach; the analysis may cover more of the area than is finally implemented. Suitable diagram-techniques (e.g. UML, other drawings) should be used where appropriate. If a method is applied selectively, explain which parts were used and why. Experimental projects should pay careful attention to control conditions, samples selected, etc. to ensure a valid result. Testing and evaluation should be given due consideration. It is important that you state how you will evaluate your work. For a design project it is appropriate to consider testing at the same time as specification.

Chapter 4: Design, Implementation and testing. This should explain the design technique chosen (and justify why it is appropriate) from the various ones available; it should select a suitable subset of the things described in the analysis chapter and develop a design. Where trade-offs exist between different designs, the chosen approach should be justified. In addition to illustrating "coding traps", this should highlight particular novel aspects to algorithms. Testing should be according to the scheme presented in the Analysis chapter and should follow some suitable model - e.g. category partition, state machine-based. Both functional testing and user-acceptance testing are appropriate. For experimental/investigative projects, techniques developed should be evaluated against a standard result set for calibration, as well as the "live" data set. For theoretical projects, the relative power/expressiveness of the theory should be evaluated with respect to competing approaches.

Chapter 5: Results and discussion. The main results of your work should be presented, together with critical discussion. The chapter should cover three things (although these would not be used as section headings):
• Findings - present all the results (products, experimental findings, theories, etc.) generated during the project. This may also include some off-topic findings that were not expected, or which were side-effects of other explorations.
• Goals achieved - describes the degree to which the findings support the original objectives laid out for the project. The goals may be partially or fully achieved, or exceeded. An experimental project may prove, or disprove the original thesis. A theoretical project may cover some or all of the example cases. Note that reporting of failures to achieve goals is important since a fundamental feature of the assessment procedures is that the processes (how you went about your project) are often as important as the products of the project.
• Further work - describes two things: firstly, new areas of investigation prompted by developments in this project, and secondly parts of the current work which were not completed due to time constraints and/or problems encountered.
• Chapter 6 Conclusions. The conclusions can be summarised in a fairly short chapter (2 or 3 pages). This chapter brings together many of the points that you will have made in other chapters, especially in the previous results and discussion chapter. Do not be afraid of repeating some of your earlier statements here, albeit using different wording.
